Alicia & I Talking on Edna's Step

This chapter starts of with Esperanza, the main character, sitting talking to Alicia, one of her friends. Esperanza begins to talk abotu a purse she once got from Alicia and about how it has Guadalajara stiched onto it. Guadalajara is Alicia's home and this mean something to Esperanza because she feels like she dosen't have a home. Esperanza dosen't consider her house on Mango Street to actually be her home, her home lies in her dreams. Alicia tells Esperanza that she still is part of Mango Street and will come back eventually. Esperanza feels that this street will never get better though and she dosen't want to come back.

She meant, that no matter what you do, or where you go, you WERE here, and it DID affect who you will become. As long as she lives ESperanza will never forget the life experiences she endured while living on mango street. It has affected her personality and how she will see life, where whe wants to go, and what she wants to do. So she can never be rid of Mango Street. It is a part of her.

I think that she meant that no matter what your'e here and there really isn't anything you can do about it so either way, your'e still going to be on Mango Street.

This meant no matter Esperanza goes she will always have a part of Mango Street with. She will always remember the people at Mango Street. Her life experiences here will always affect her in her future and it will be apart of her past always.

What I think Alicia meant by the simile is that she lives on Mango Street and nothing is going to change about that so stop asking for things like a new house.
